What’s your playing and coaching background?

I played high school football at Bellarmine College Preparatory and I’m a member of the 1981 undefeated State Championship team in California. Then, I played at West Valley College and Sacramento State. I have coached for 25 years, 17 of those in Junior College.

Which coaches have been influential in your playing and coaching careers?

Walt Arnold, Cass Jackson, Steve Cox, Bob Mattos and Marshall Sperbeck.

What’s your overall coaching philosophy?

Treat each player like your own son. Be honest, work hard, and lead by example.

What do you want college coaches to know about your program, your players, etc?

De Anza College players will out-work others. We play the game with integrity, honor, and pride.

What’s the most important thing a student-athlete should focus on to put himself/herself in position to get successfully recruited by colleges?

Take appropriate classes, have an academic plan for transfer/graduation, and get the best grades possible. Put work in the classroom like you do on the field.

How has college recruiting changed with the development of technology?

Simply put, it has changed everything. Athletes can work with their coaches and reach a wider audience by using technology like FieldLevel. Likewise, colleges can analyze more videos and see more athletes even with limited budgets.
